2024 Sabres Tryouts

The SBA will be holding a pre-tryout for SBA domestic players (Under 12 Boys and Girls and Under 14 Boys ONLY) in the second last week of Term 3, 2023. These pre-tryouts are designed to gauge domestic player suitability for the Sabres program. Successful triallists from these sessions will then be invited to commence tryouts with the returning 2023 Sabres cohort in Term 4, 2023. All NEW U16 and U18 Boys and Girls wishing to tryout are asked to register as new players and join the sessions commencing the weekend of Friday the 6th of October.

There will be a one off $15 non refundable registration/administration fee for any new players wishing to tryout for the Sabres program. This cost covers external court hire, coaches and administration.

The Sabres Pre-Tryout Process is now complete. A reminder that there is no Under 14 Girls Pre-Tryout on Thursday the 7th of September.

  • Preliminary Squads will be named each morning the week commencing Monday the 16th of October (Example: Under 12 Girls squads will be named on Wednesday the 18th of October after their session the night before) in preparation for practice matches against Nunawading Spectres on Friday the 20th of October.
  • Practice matches will also be used to move players around and finalise team selections:
  • Dandenong Rangers: Friday 27th October.  Girls at Dandenong / Boys at Sandringham Basketball Centre
  • Casey Cavaliers: Sunday 29th October. Girls at Sandringham Basketball Centre / Boys at Casey Basketball
  • The Sabres training schedule will commence on Sunday the 22nd of October.
  • All dates, times and venues are subject to change.
  • Teams can and will be changed subject to player fit/ability throughout the pre-season practice matches and up until the end of VJBL Grading Phase #1.
  • Sabres teams will be entered in the Southern Peninsula tournament across the weekend of Saturday November 11th and Sunday November 12th.
  • VJBL Grading for the 2024 season commences on Friday the 17th of November.
  • Final VJBL Cross-over games before the Christmas break will be played on Friday the 8th of December.

2024 Try-out process:

  1. Please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to each tryout session so we can mark off names and assign each player a number;
  2. Each player is asked to bring a clearly labelled basketball, drink bottle and either a reversible singlet or one light and one dark coloured top;
  3. All on-court tryout sessions will be closed to parents;
  4. There will be a maximum of eight coaches on court during any one tryout, including the SBA Head Coaches;
  5. No parent coach of a child playing in the age group will be permitted to be on court during the tryout process in a coaching capacity;
  6. Please refrain from approaching the coaches involved in tryouts to find out how your son or daughter went during a particular tryout session. Coaches are also asked not to disclose information about the tryouts to parents;
  7. Please ensure that you check our website prior to each tryout session as some session times and venues may change due to availability;
  8. Anyone wishing to move to the Sabres from another association needs to complete a Permission to Train form as per VJBL rules located here.

2024 On-Court Player Selection Criteria:

  • SAMS feedback from previous seasons;
  • Performance at tryouts;
  • Level of skill in dribbling, passing, shooting, finishing and defensive ability;
  • Demonstrated understanding of Sabres Style of Play;
  • Decision making and athletic potential (height / size / wingspan / quickness);
  • Team balance (what roles do the team need to have covered?);
  • Discipline and engagement in practices;
  • Knowledge of game plays;
  • Wok ethic;
  • Coachability / Willingness to change and be coached;

Important information about representative basketball

Commitment/Expenses for 2024

  • New playing uniform (singlet / shorts /warm up top / training singlet /hoodie)
  • 2024 registration fee of $650 with an early payment discount
  • Weekly scoresheet fees which are at the discretion of the VJBL and its venues
  • Games are played on Friday Night all across Melbourne including Geelong and other regional centres like Traralgon, Bendigo and Ballarat
  • Training for Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s is conducted on Sunday mornings and mid-week
  • Both training sessions for Under 18s are conducted mid-week
  • All players who are trying out for the Sabres program must be playing domestic in the SBA junior domestic competitions in their own age group in either A Grade or B Grade.
