The Victorian Championship for U20’s looked a little different this 2025 season with a short, sharp format, pitting Victoria’s best U20 players and clubs against each other to bring out high quality basketball each Sunday evening!
In a first, any VJBL association could nominate their team for the 7 round Victorian Championship competition, no grading, no trials; simply nominate your team to compete and you’re in. It will see 32 Men’s teams and 15 Women’s teams compete for the ‘Victorian Champions’ title.
The Men were split geographically into 4 groups of 8 teams. Following 7 matches within their pool, the top teams will come together for the Round of 16 knockout, competing in elimination games until the Victorian Championship game. The Women’s competition tweaked slightly to reflect the team entries. Featuring 15 teams, they’ll also play 7 matches each, before coming together for the knockout stages.
Your Sandringham Sabres U20 Women and Men’s team battled out each Sunday and progressed through to the big dance last Thursday 17th April at Montmorency Secondary College.
With the women up first, the girls kicked off the season hungry and ended up going undefeated and in an epic Grand Final game v Altona where the girls ended the season with a bang and the title of U20 Women’s Victoria Champions Winners. The girls finished game with an impressive score of 81 v 36 and saw Natalia Hordejuk took home the MVP honours, scoring 16pts. A huge shoutout to Head Coach Michael Burke, (SBA Life Member & U18 Girls Assistant Coach) his dedication and commitment to the game and the girl’s development this season has been incredible, and the SBA appreciates your contribution to the women’s program.
The U20 Sandringham Sabres boys were up next and in a tight battle to the finish line the boys unfortunately fell short to Kilsyth Cobras 82 – 77. The boys had a fantastic season, and the SBA would like to thank Matt Tuohey and the team for all your efforts this season.
Thank you to all players, coaches, staff, families and friends for supporting the U20s program this season.
GO SABRES
