FOUR SABRES PICKED FOR 2020 EAST COAST CHALLENGE

In another testament to our elite junior pathway, four junior Sabres have been selected for the upcoming East Coast Challenge in Sydney early next year.

Representing the girls program are Hannah Wickstrom, Christina Roberts and Jaida Reid. All three girls are a part of our 16.1 squad, with Wickstrom and Roberts part of our Silver-medal winning team at last year’s Club Championship. Reid joins the Sabres after starting her basketball career with the Knox Raiders.

The Sabres boys will be represented by 16.1 player Michael Aminov, who has joined us from Hawthorn.

“This is a great result for our club,” said Simon Giovannoni, Head Coach of SBA Women and Girls. “The athletes have spent many hours working hard to improve themselves with their Sabres teams, SBA domestic clubs and in the Basketball Victoria SDP program. Selection for the ECC is great recognition for their effort and application. Their parents and the wider SBA community should be proud of their selection.”

On behalf of the entire Southern Basketball Association, we wish all four athletes the best of luck!

The East Coast Challenge (ECC) was a concept which was originally set up by Basketball NSW and Basketball Victoria for metropolitan athletes at the U16 and U18 level to compete in a round robin style tournament in Sydney.
Due to the success of the tournament in recent years both South Australia and ACT have joined.

In January eight NSW Metropolitan teams (two U16 Boys’ & Girls’ teams and two U18 Boys’ & Girls’ teams) play against teams from each of the other states.

The U16 teams are selected from the NSW Metropolitan selection camps while the U18 teams consist of the final 20 athletes that remain in the NSW Metropolitan U18 State Team selection process for the upcoming Australian Junior Championships.

The ECC is a unique development opportunity as it takes athletes away from their comfort zone by exposing them to state and national level talented athletes & teams. It aims to create positive challenges for players as they need to become accustomed to the standard of play required to compete at an Australian Junior Championship.
