The Sabres junior program is pleased to welcome registrations for the 2023 VJBL season. Please read the following information carefully.

All players are asked to arrive 30 minutes before their session for registration.
All players are asked to bring a clearly labelled basketball, drink bottle, reversible singlet or a light and a dark top.
The SBA requires players from other Associations to bring a completed Permission to Train form to be presented at the first tryout you attend.
Players must register on the links below before the cut-off. Late registrations won’t be accepted.
Players must attend ALL of the tryout dates listed for their age group.
Please check the age groups below to get an idea of where to register your son/daughter.
Lists will be published on the SBA website after each trial

New U12 and U14 Boys & Girls to Sabres – Pre Tryout

The pre-trial for Under 12 and Under 14 Boys and Girls is exclusively for new players to the Sabres program – those from SBA domestic competitions and those from other Associations. After this pre-trial, a shortlist will be invited to attend the first tryout which will include 2022 Sabres players. Please note these sessions are closed to parents.

The 2023 tryout process will include:

3 x on court training sessions
2 x intraclub games

We anticipate being in a position to name Preliminary Squads on Friday the 14th of October.

Term 4 training schedule will commence on Monday the 17th of October.

There will be additional practice matches during October/November before grading commences.

All of our Sabres teams will be entering the Southern Peninsula tournament on the weekend of Saturday the 12th of November and Sunday the 13^th of November.

Important information about representative basketball

Commitment/Expenses for 2023

New playing uniform (singlet / shorts /warm up top / training singlet /hoodie)
2023 registration fee of $650 with an early payment discount
Weekly scoresheet fees which are at the discretion of the VJBL and its venues
Games are played on Friday Night all across Melbourne including Geelong and other regional centres like Traralgon, Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong
Training for Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s is conducted on Sunday mornings and mid-week
Both training sessions for Under 18s are conducted mid-week
All players who are trying out for the Sabres program must be playing domestic in the SBA junior domestic competitions in their own age group in either A Grade or B Grade.

2023 Try-out process

All on-court tryout sessions will be closed to parents;
There will be a maximum of eight coaches on court during any one tryout, including the SBA Head Coaches;
No parent coach of a child playing in the age group will be permitted to be on court during the tryout process in a coaching capacity;
Please refrain from approaching the coaches involved in tryouts to find out how your son or daughter went during a particular tryout session. Coaches are also asked not to disclose information about the tryouts to parents;
All dates and times are subject to COVID restrictions, Please ensure that you check our website prior to each tryout session as some session times and venues may change due to availability

2023 On-Court Player Selection Criteria

SAMS feedback from previous seasons;
Performance at tryouts;
Level of skill in dribbling, passing, shooting, finishing and defensive ability;
Demonstrated understanding of Sabres Style of Play;
Decision making and athletic potential;
Team balance (1,2,3,4 & 5);
Discipline and engagement in practices;
Knowledge of game plays;
Coachability;
